about nathan bibb

David Nathan Bibb was born in Orlando, Florida on March 5, 1973. His father, William R. Bibb is a firefighter by profession, and a musician, blacksmith, and instrument maker in his spare time. His mother, Pattie Bibb, is a world-renowned doll artist whose surreal style has made her a sought-after instructor the world over.

Nathan began his musical studies at the age of 16 when his father began teaching him to play guitar. Mostly self-taught, Nathan has always held a fascination with why standard musical forms, such as tuning, were designed the way they were. In his quest to expand his own musical boundaries, he began recording his works in 1994 to further define the structure of his music. In 1996, Nathan received a BA in History from the University of Central Florida, where he was president of the Alpha Gamma Chi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society in History.

Beginning in 1998, Nathan began moving away from traditional musical structures and experimented with longer and less formalized approaches to writing music. After relocating to New York in the summer of 1999, Nathan was introduced to a variety of composers and traditional music from New York and around the world. He is most highly influenced by the minimal composers such as Tony Conrad and La Monte Young, and the ìNew York Schoolî composers of the mid 20th century (John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Christian Wolff).

Today, Nathan considers himself a fledgling composer, exploring the vast world of music composition and writing scores mixing traditional musical notation and experimental notational systems. His current studies include alternate tuning systems (such as Just Intonation), explorations of long tones in music and their interactions, and traditional instrumentation and score writing.

Nathanís greatest source of inspiration comes from his wife, Laura, for whom he wrote his first piece of music in proper notation, entitled simply ìFor Laura,î which was played during their wedding on June 23, 2002. They now live in their new home in Union Beach, New Jersey and are having fun with their first son, William Dylan Bibb, born on May 20, 2003.
